How Bristol's councils license dog boarders
Twenty-four dog day care, home boarding and boarding-kennel businesses are listed for Bristol, and they fall under four different councils depending on where they are based: Bristol City Council for the city itself, South Gloucestershire Council around Filton, Bradley Stoke and parts of Fishponds and Kingswood, North Somerset Council around Portishead, and Bath and North East Somerset Council around Keynsham. All four require a licence for dog boarding, home boarding and day care, but they publish very different amounts of information.
Bristol City Council
Bristol City Council's own licensed animal boarding establishments register is a PDF dated 1 April 2026, checked September 2026, and its licensing covers sixteen of the twenty-four entries on this page. Fifteen of those sixteen are confirmed directly against the document, each carrying a star rating from three to five. The sixteenth, Walks with the Pack, is not: the council's own document states that no other premises are licensed for animal boarding beyond those it lists, and this business does not appear in it, so no licence block is shown for it here even though another site online makes a claim about one.
South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset councils
None of these three councils publishes an accessible public register for the areas this page covers: South Gloucestershire Council and North Somerset Council have no register, PDF or online list of any kind that could be found, and Bath and North East Somerset Council's own site is the same. The eight businesses under these three councils have no register entry to check against; where a licence number appears here, it is one the business publishes about itself, treated as the business's own claim rather than a fact confirmed by a council record, and four of the eight publish no number at all. They cover Filton and Bradley Stoke, Fishponds, Kingswood and Longwell Green, Portishead, and Keynsham's one kennels, Latchets Kennels & Cattery.
What a star rating means here
Where a star rating is shown, it is Bristol City Council's own inspection score, similar in spirit to a food hygiene rating, and it is not a customer review. It says nothing about vaccination policy, breed rules or insurance, and its date on the PDF is the only indication of when the council last reissued the list. Ask to see the current licence and its expiry date directly, whichever council covers the business you are calling, especially for the eight businesses whose licence number here is self-stated rather than confirmed against a public register.
A licence is still required either way
A council choosing not to publish a register does not mean dog boarding, home boarding or day care is unlicensed there: the legal requirement for a licence is the same in South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset as it is in Bristol itself, and it is the publishing of a public list that differs, not the underlying law. That is exactly why asking to see the certificate in person, rather than relying on a website claim, matters most for the eight businesses under those three councils.
