Dog boarding and day care in Cambridge, area by area
Cambridge's dog boarders, day cares and kennels are heavily concentrated in one area, Ely, and thin or absent everywhere else. This isn't only a matter of where businesses happen to be based: East Cambridgeshire District Council's own register, which covers the whole east of the county, carries no address field at all, so every business it licenses is shown here under the single Ely area even though the district stretches well beyond Ely town itself.
By area
| Area | Businesses |
|---|---|
| Ely | 11 |
| Histon | 5 |
| Sawston | 2 |
| Cambridge | 1 |
| Cherry Hinton | 1 |
| Chesterton | 0 |
| Trumpington | 0 |
Ely: the biggest concentration, and why
Eleven of Cambridge's 20 listed businesses sit under the Ely area, all licensed by East Cambridgeshire District Council — a mix of home boarders and six of the town's seven boarding kennels. Ely here really means anywhere in the East Cambridgeshire district sharing a CB6 or CB7 postcode, which takes in Soham, Littleport, Haddenham and several other villages as well as Ely itself, since the council's register does not record a street address for any entry.
Histon, Sawston and the central Cambridge postcodes
Histon has five listed businesses, licensed by South Cambridgeshire District Council: The Hound Dog Hotel, Lingwood Dog Day Care, Norman's Dog Day Care and Oscar & Co as home boarders, and Oakington Dog Day Care Centre as a boarding kennels licence holder. Sawston has two, both South Cambridgeshire-licensed home boarders: Penny's From Heaven and We Love Pets South Cambridgeshire. The core CB1 to CB5 postcode districts, covered by the area called simply Cambridge, have only one listed business, Home from Home, plus Cambridge Paws under the separate Cherry Hinton area — thin coverage that reflects how few operators could be confirmed on Cambridge City Council's own register rather than a genuine absence of dog boarders working in the city itself.
Chesterton and Trumpington: no listed business
Chesterton and Trumpington both have no listed business. A dedicated search for Trumpington specifically found nothing beyond the same town-wide results already captured elsewhere, which may be a genuine gap or a limit of the two registers that could not be checked directly for this batch. Chesterton has a similar gap: the one register entry found there had no confirmed phone number, so it isn't published, per the same rule applied everywhere on this site.
Why this matters
If you're in central Cambridge, Chesterton or Trumpington, the businesses actually nearest to you may be licensed under a different area label than where you'd expect to search — checking the whole town's choosing guide alongside your own area page is worth doing before assuming nothing is available locally. A search for kennels Ely or dog boarding Histon will generally surface the businesses genuinely local to you faster than a town-wide search for Cambridge on its own, given how concentrated the listed supply is in those two areas.
